THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF A DOUBLE RATE LETTER TO MANILA
OCTOBER 9, 1868: 30c orange, 2 copies (#71, #78), 24c lilac, tied by three strikes of segmented cork cancels on folded letter bearing red BOSTON OCT 9 PAID, Storer forwarder, "2",  LONDON PAID 20 OC 68, "68" (American packet credit and "Via Marseilles" on front, Hong Kong transit and small MANILA 9 DEC 68 receiver on reverse.

84c was the double rate (42c) payment via Marseilles. The letter departed New York on October 10 on the Inman Liner "CITY OF PARIS".

The letter refers to the "close of the Spanish insurrection" and the up-coming Grant Presidential election.
