JANUARY 10, 1862:24c steel blue, 2 copies (1 SE), 3c deep rose (#70b, #65), tied by two strikes of Boston PAID on folded letter bearing red BOSTON AM.PKT.  JAN 11 PAID, Hong Kong c.d.s. and large MANILA 16 MAR 1862 ISs. FILIPs. receiver on reverse, red LONDON JA 25 62 PAID c.d.s. along with “1d” “30” (credit marking) and “Via Marseilles” on front.

51c was the single rate via Marseilles when calculated on a 1/4oz basis. The only example of this rate which was in existence for just 19 months. The cover left New York January 11 on the Inman Liner “ETNA".

The letter refers to commodity speculation, with a not quite so enthusiastic view of the war.
