5 CUARTOS FIRST ISSUE of 1854

Stamps first issued on February 1, 1854 and intended for interior use only.
Engraved in Manila in plates of 40 subjects (5 x 8), producing 40 different types.
Only one plate used for 5 Cuartos but underwent several re-touching
and re-engraving during printing.

Three plates were used for the 10 Cuartos value.

Paper used for the First Issue extremely brittle. Flaws expected on blocks.
However, these flaws are generally tears rather than thinning.

Oxidation expected because of the quality of the ink used
and the conditions that the stamps have been exposed to.
