THE
REPUBLIC OF THE VISAYAS, PANAY
Founded
in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, on November 17, 1898.
First
called the Provisional Revolutionary Government.
Replaced
by a Politico - Military Government on September 23, 1898,
and
finally declared itself as a Republic on December 2, 1898.
First
discovered on November 24, 1899, when a half sheet of 25 was captured at
Janiuay, Panay Island by Lt. F.B. Shaw, of General Hughes 19th Infantry
Brigade. Additional few copies recovered on January 8, 1900 from rebel
commander Maxelon's headquarters at Sudlon Mountains, Cebu, by Battalion
Adjutant 1st. Lt. Amos H. Martin and Assistant Surgeon J.G.
Marron.
In
the 1930s, Stanley Gibbons of New York had in their possession a block
of 25 (5 x 5 or half sheet). The block was later broken up for easier disposal
to collectors.
Iloilo
was captured by American naval and military force on February 11, 1899.
Because of the relatively small contingent stationed in Iloilo the American
Army failed to advance to the other parts of the island. As a result
the Filipinos was left in control of these places for close to ten months
after the fall of Iloilo.
