Figure 2 POBRES / 1 Quartillo / Años de 1834 y 1835 Figures 2 and 3 shows a specimen of the type of design which was current between 1826 and 1845 and which re-appeared on the stamped paper for 1838-39. The Coat of Arms is in the center with the labels in either oval or rectangular frames to the left and right of the coat of arms. The stamp was much more cleanly printed than during the preceding period. The stamps of all classes were printed in black. Figure 4 shows
the type of design which was current between 1846 and 1867, The design
of the stamp consists of an allegorical figure of a seated woman facing
either to the left or to the right within a single-lined circular frame,
within which were also placed the labels indicating the class of the stamp,
its value, and the biennial period for which it was valid, The Coat
of Arms of the reigning sovereign within a circular frame about 28
mm. in diameter was embossed about 4 cm. to the left of the printed stamp.
Beginning about 1856 only SELLO 4 DE OFICIO and POBRES were printed in
black. Each of the first four classes
was printed in a different color.

The allegorical figure of a woman, either seated or standing, was enclosed within a more or less rectangular frame whose height was greater than its width. Within this frame was an oval space on which was embossed the Coat of Arms of the reigning sovereign. The stamp was about
3 cm. Wide by 4.5 cm. tall. Different colors were used for printing
each class of stamp, except SELLO 4 DE OFICIO and POBRES, which were of
the same color.

The stamp was rectangular, either without rounded corners, and the width exceeded the height. The central design, which varied considerably always included an oval space on which was embossed the arms of the reigning sovereign. The stamp was from 4 to 4.3 cm. high by 5.0 to 5.5 cm. wide. Different colors were used for printing each class. Figure 8 shows the design of 1898-99 issue. This design is similar to Figure 5, but smaller. The stamp was 4.8 cm. wide by 2.8 cm. high. Different colors were used for each class. The shield, which forms a part of the Coat of Arms at the left was embossed. |
