1943
Mindanao Guerrilla Mail
DECEMBER
17: PHILIPPINES to CALIFORNIA
Described as:
Stampless cover with cancellation "Posted in the Free Philippines 17
Dec 1944 Mindanao Guerilla Area". The cover is addressed to Pamona
College, Clairmont, CA. Note the manuscript "To -- C[ensorship P[hilippine
G[overnement]" Mindanao was not liberated until the landing on April 17,
1945. This cover may have been forwarded inside another cover, although
there is no proof that the cover was finally forwarded to the United States.
Attractive and unusual item. |
The date
is actually DECEMBER 17, 1943 and not "1944" as described by the seller.
The "CPG" blue manuscript does not necessarily mean CENSORSHIP PHILIPPINE
GOVERNMENT per seller's description.
It could
be the initials of a courier. There is a strong possibility that this letter
was actually forwarded to Australia and then turned over to the U.S. Army
Postal System. No postage was required at origin since no postal system
was operating at that time. |
