AND KILLER

"MANILA, P.I., STA. No 1" Boxed Registry Control Postmark
and MANILA, STA. No. 1 Straight-line Killer
1917: MANILA to ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

Mailed at the Escolta Sub-Post Office which was in operation for a short period of time as the building it occupied was gutted by fire. Also party destroyed by the fire was the main office of the Philippine Education Co. or PECO.

The sub-post office never re-opened until sometime in the mid 1930, when a new sub-post office was opened at the Prudential Building, near Sta Cruz Church, also in Escolta. it is believed that this sub-post office used cancelling devices from the Manila Central Post Office as no "ESCOLTA" postmark examples have been seen or reported. In June 1947, the Escolta sub-post office was converted into a full post office with assigned STA CRUZ / MANILA and STA CRUZ / ESCOLTA, MANILA postmarks.
