1904
OCTOBER 19: BULASAN, SORSOGON to MANILA
Constabulary
penalty envelope used privately and registered, franked with 1c Franklin
and 2c x 4
Washington (213-214) for proper 9c single domestic rate (1c + 8c registry
fee), 1 ounce maximum weight. Backstamped MANILA, November 2.
Light brown
"PHILIPPINE ISLANDS" post office seal (OX1) folded at left side, tied with
arrival cds and with the manuscript note "Cut open accidentally".
NOTE: Scott
list the first post office seal (OX1) with "PHILIPPINE ISLANDS" imprint
as issued in 1906. Admittedly I have no explanation on this 1904 usage.
I do not think there is an error on the magenta MANILA arrivals as it is
a match to the manuscript dispatch date on the cover front. Could it be
that the seal was added much later and the Manila arrivals adjusted to
1904? Your guess is as good as mine.
Your inputs
on the above cover will be very much appreciated. |
