1941
Manila to Shanghai
3 DECEMBER
1941: MANILA to SHANGHAI
ebay lot sold
for just a little over US$ 1G, certain to a Chinese collector. Described
by seller as:
Another
exceptional Hong Kong censored cover, sent from Manila to Shanghai via
Hong Kong, December 3, 1941, just before Japan invaded Hong Kong on December
8. Illustrated army-navy Y.M.C.A. stationery sent clipper rate to the American
Y.M.C.A. in Shanghai. Hong Kong censor label and Victoria backstamp; I
didn't want to lift the censor label but I looked at the envelope over
a strong light and it appears to be cancelled on the 4th. Censor "26" handstamp
ties the label, and there is a segmented circle Chinese handstamp on rear
as well as a Chinese-language Shanghai receiver--which adds to the mystery
as it is dated February 25, 1942! I don't know whether there were any later
flights out of Hong Kong, but this is probably a last day of usage before
the Japanese attack! |
