1940 Philippines to Germany Tacloban via Italy
1940 APRIL 20: MANILA to GERMANY

Seller's Description: Surely one of the most amazing Philippines covers ever offered on eBay with great historical interest, especially for the censor specialist. This is the first of two stationery cards that I am listing, sent from a nun teaching at the Holy Infant Academy in Tacloban to her father in Thurndorf. At first, I was confused and intrigued by the father's name, Isidor Roth, which suggested a Jewish individual, and strange, especially given the date, April 20, 1940. However, the man was Catholic obviously. His daughter wrote an instructional marking "To Germany via Italy" which was the Axis routing. The card went through the British system instead, and received the very scarce triangular "2" transit censor in Hong Kong, then an unusual "52" Egyptian (or possibly from Iraq or elsewhere in the Middle East), and then a German censor on arrival--all neatly struck on the front of the card. I did some research on the addressee, and I believe that he also had a son who was a priest in Korea after WW2, captured by the North Koreans during the Korean War, interned as a spy, and martyred.

Comments: A few minutes after this lot closed I received a query if it is really worth $355.00. I will say no. However, this is my own call. There are so many factors to consider. Emotion is one. The desire to acquire one NOW is certainly a factor. What if you've been after an item for a long time now and the opportunity is on hand - would you not grab it? The feeling of getting a nice piece cannot be quantified.

For me $355.00 is a little high for this card but I also know very well that the buyer is now in cloud nine and the losing bidders are scratching their heads....and with that, I dare not argue.
