OCTOBER 23: MANILA to OHIO
Sorry to say
this but for the 7 days this item was on the eBay block many of Philippine
postal history collectors suddenly became blind. Realized $26.55 and Ed
Nocom hit the million dollar (or peso) jackpot on this one. David Chiong
and I estimated this piece to be between $150.00 to $ 200.00 and David
was waiting on the wings ready to bid this amount just in case someone
over bidded Ed. We later found out that Ed's bid was just a little above
$200.00.
THIS IS A MAJOR
PIECE FOR THE COMMONWAELTH PERIOD and recognizing its is what postal history
is all about.
The 4p and
5p together on a cover regularly come out BUT NOT ON A WRAPPER. There is
a big difference between the two specially when dealing in postal rates.
Please take note of this: from the Spanish Philippines classic period to
the present circular rate is ALWAYS much harder than first class mail rate.
Likewise the combination of a 5p plain and 4p large "COMONWEALTH" is exceptional,
making the tear on the 4p trivial.
Without doubt
a show piece. This is the kind of stuff that make jurors take a second
look and even scratch their heads and say to themselves "WOW."
Yes, there
is some truth to the saying that one piece does not make a collection or
an exhibit. HOWEVER, THIS PIECE CERTAINLY CAN "MAKE" AN EXHIBIT. |
