1898 MANILA to STETTIN POSTMARKED MANILA
ROUTED VIA HONG KONG

SPANISH AMERICAN WAR PERIOD

Franked with 1c x 2 and 3c x 2 1898 King Alfonso XIII issues for proper 8c single outbound rate.
Postmark on the stamps indistinct but I am certain the the "29 JUN 98" postmark on the left
is Spanish Philippines type. Carried privately to HONG KONG and dispatched by HK PO on July 15.
Destination entry of August 17, 1898 on verso.

The Spanish Post in Manila was still functioning at this time but could not dispatch
outbound letters directly to Europe. Prior to the Spanish American War letters
were coursed through Hong Kong but without passing through the HK Post Office.
